The Institute of National Remembrance (Łódź Branch) and the Museum of Polish Children – victims of totalitarianism held an off-site history lesson “Losy dzieci w okupowanej Łodzi 1939–1945” [The fate of children in occupied Łódź 1939–1945].
The event was attended by five groups from secondary schools in Łódź who travelled the same route as the wartime Czech, Polish, Romani, Jewish and German children living in occupied Łódź.
The participants had to complete the tasks requiring historical knowledge, perceptiveness and the ability to work in a team. This form of lesson gave young people a chance to discover the history of the city from the perspective of the youngest wartime victims and better understand their fate. The important part of the event was also bringing to life the work of archaeologists, anthropologists and historians whose daily work is to search for, examine and restore identity to the youngest victims of the Second World War.
We would like to thank all the participants for their involvement, active engagement and readiness to explore this difficult history of children affected by totalitarian regimes. We believe that the acquired knowledge and insights will always remain in the memories of the young people and that the long journey tracing the wartime fates of the youngest will be an inspiration for further exploration the history of our city and its residents.
