On 19 March, ceremonies were held to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the first transport of female prisoners to a branch of the German camp for Polish children in Przemysłowa Street in Łódź. The events took place at the Community Centre for Culture, Sports, Tourism and Recreation in Dzierżązna.
Organised by the Museum of Polish Children – victims of totalitarianism, in collaboration with the Community Centre for Culture, Sports, Tourism and Recreation in Dzierżązna, the ceremonies were hosted in the Zgierz Municipality on 19 March 2025. These events honoured the young female prisoners of the agricultural branch of the German camp for Polish children in Łódź, marking the 82nd anniversary of the first transport of girls to this site of persecution.
Dr Andrzej Janicki, Acting Director of the Museum, explained, “In March 1943, a branch of the camp for Polish children was established on land requisitioned by the Third Reich in Dzierżązna, near Przemysłowa Street. The branch was headed by Heinrich Fuge. In the second half of March that year, the first transport of girls, aged 8 to 16, arrived at the camp. These young prisoners were subjected to arduous agricultural labour. The camp ceased operations in January 1945 when Heinrich Fuge and the staff of the main camp in Łódź fled.”
The commemorative programme included the laying of flowers at a memorial plaque, the opening of the open-air exhibition “Nie tylko Przemysłowa… Dzieciństwo w Litzmannstadt” [Not only Przemysłowa… Childhood in Litzmannstadt] and a screening of the film “Litzmannstadt – gehenna polskich dzieci” [Litzmannstadt – gehenna of Polish children]
